An Open Letter to Young Christians

By: Jessica Reese

God has continued to touch my heart with the Bible verse Esther 4:14 CSB: "Who knows, perhaps you have come to your royal position for such a time as this." Moved by this divine nudge, I am acting on what I believe is a call from God to address my fellow young believers.

Being a teenager or young adult in today's world is inherently challenging. The path is even more daunting for those of us who are born-again, Bible-believing Christians. Our daily reality often includes navigating an environment where our core beliefs are not just in the minority but are actively criticized and ostracized. In high schools, colleges, and graduate schools across the country—and indeed, around the world—Christian youths frequently encounter an atmosphere that is at best indifferent and at worst hostile to our faith.

Why is it so challenging? Our commitment to living according to the Scriptures means we often stand out. Romans 12:11-14 CSB instructs us: "Do not lack diligence in zeal; be fervent in the Spirit; serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; be persistent in prayer. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep." These words guide us to a life of passionate devotion and selfless love, a stark contrast to the prevailing culture of self-interest and skepticism towards spiritual zeal.

Moreover, our mission as Christians compels us not just to live differently but to also share our faith actively. Matthew 28:19 CSB commands us, "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."

Fulfilling this Great Commission can be particularly daunting when it feels like you are swimming against the current of popular opinion and societal norms. Yet, in the face of these challenges, we are called to be courageous. Joshua 1:9 CSB reminds us, "Haven’t I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." It is this assurance that emboldens us, that fortifies our spirit in the moments of our greatest trials.

To my fellow young Christians, I know it's not easy. Each day can feel like a battle, a test of your faith and resolve. But remember, we are not alone. Our strength comes from a higher source— one that equips us to face these challenges with a heart of courage and a spirit of persistence. You might feel isolated, but in this vast community of faith, globally and historically, we are united.

Let us hold on to the truth that we might indeed be in our respective positions and stages of life "for such a time as this." Whether in classrooms, dorm rooms, or digital forums, let's see our circumstances not just as trials but as opportunities to affirm our faith and extend the love of Christ to those around us.

The road might be tough, but the journey is worthwhile. Let us press on, not just surviving but thriving in our faith, as we transform challenges into opportunities to witness and glorify God in all that we do. Remember, in the multitude of voices and choices that mark these formative years, let's resonate with hope, act in love, and remain steadfast in our faith.
